In 1888 Pears' son-in-law and marketing genius Thomas J. Barratt familiarised a new ad for Pears soap. Barrett had learned the famous painting A Child's World by John Everett Millais, the most popular artiste in England. Barratt shocked the world when he adapted the painting by adding a bar of soap labelled Pears and adding 29 words of copy crossways the top promoting the benefits of the product.

The product developed the bestselling soap of its era. In telling Barratt's marketing genius, Twitchell tells us, He learned how to make value for one of the most undifferentiated products of the machine age - soap.
