It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia-The Nightman Cometh Seanson 4 Special Features.
Instructions:
There is an etiquette at the theater that suggests when and how an audience member can react to the play being performed. For example, you will rarely hear an audience member cheer, hoot, or holler at a live performance (like you would at a rock concert). Instead theater audiences will clap to show their approval.
This wasn't always the case. The theater was once a very lively event. In fact, in the middle of the nineteenth century the theater in this country was as lively as a modern day sporting event.
At that time theater audiences would say popular lines of dialog with the leading actors (much like at a rock concert when audience members sing the chorus). Audience members allowed themselves to be swept into the story. They would heckle the villains and make obvious their support for the heroes.
In those days the theater could also be dangerous. If a play attempted to make sense of volatile social or political issues (which they often did) the audiences were known to riot. We have documented major historical riots that centered on the theater-- In contrast, can you imagine a riot at a theater today?
While I can't transport you back in time I can show you an example of what I believe the theater once was. The cast and crew of the television series Always Sunny in Philadelphia put together a live performance of one of their more popular episodes.
They performed in front of a live (and rowdy audience) and the atmosphere was electric. While it is certainly very contemporary in material-- the live experience created is a throw back to what the theater may have once been.
Instructions:
1. Watch the episode of Always Sunny in Philadelphia provided here.
2. Observe the audience interaction and the atmosphere created by this live performance (in some ways this is more of a rock concert than a contemporary theater production).
3. Write a one-page (minimum) paper that outlines the ways in which contemporary theater etiquette has been ignored.
4. In your paper explore the pros and cons of this type of theater experience. What is lost and what is gained by allowing the audience to participate so enthusiastically?
5. Be specific.
