At Critical Care Hospital, the complication rate for hip replacement surgery is 8.96%. The relevant statistics appear in Table 1-A-5. The administrative staff at the hospital is concerned that the hospital complication rate does not compare favorably with the overall complication rate of all patients with hip replacement surgery in the county. The complication rate for the county is 5.5%. The county complication rate for patients age 65 or older is 8.0%; for those under age 65, the complication rate is 3.0%. Using the indirect method of standardization, calculate the complication rate for the hospital that has been adjusted for age.
