A house was burglarized and the criminal(s) defecated in the house. DNA was collected from the feces, and was also collected from cheek cells of the individuals living in the home. Two suspects were arrested and their blood was sampled for DNA. The samples had the following results reported by the forensics lab:

  1. Suspect 1: Fragment lengths 620 BP, 540 BP and 270 BP
  2. Suspect 2: Fragment lengths 860 BP, 350 BP and 250 BP
  3. Resident 1: Fragment lengths 720 BP, 450 BP and 220 BP
  4. Resident 2: Fragment lengths 720 BP, 500 BP and 220 BP
  5. DNA in feces: Fragment lengths 860 BP, 620 BP, 540 BP, 350 BP, 270 BP and 250 BP. Two very faint bands also appeared at 720 BP and 220 BP.

Do the samples provide evidence that the suspects arrested committed the crime?

No, since the feces DNA had many more fragments than either of the two suspects.

No, since there will be no human DNA in feces.

Yes, some of the fragments matched each suspect and there were no missing fragments of either suspect.

No, since there were two very faint lines that matched the DNA of the residents, this sample cannot support the claim that the suspects were present.
