Margaret Dennis

My communication style is 70% emotional. I do my best to not let my emotion get in front of logic or listening to the other side. I believe listening is very key to establishing my rebuttal. I try to dissect, almost bullet point, the other sides claims so I can methodically respond to each claim. Breaking down my points into bite size digestible pieces usually is easier for others to receive and relate to. I would say using Pathos, appeal to emotion, is key for me powering over the other side in an argument. My biggest issue with my style is arguing with others who are truly removed from emotion. This type typically has one opinion and is not willing to even participate in an argument. (Deutsch, Garten & Wilson, 2016).

An academic argument is based on verifiable and substantiated position. There is always more than side to an argument. In order for the argument to follow the standards an academic argument, both sides will ultimately follow the same rules to present the opposing positions with a claim, evidence, counter argument and rebuttal. (Deutsch, Garten & Wilson, 2016).
A recent argument I experienced was regarding the use of the term "Obamacare". My 14 year old son came home from school with opinions on Obamacare. I simply asked him if he really even knew what Obamacare meant and he didn't. I informed him Obamacare is a term used as political propaganda. He was in fact talking about Health Care Reform and should do the research before so quickly repeating what he was told by a teacher who obviously had an opinion.

What is an argument?

A argument in my opinion is when more than one person expressing their thoughts, feeling or, actually scholarly, news, trade, or/and popular sources on a certain matter. The most important part to an argument is not trying to get the last word, but moving the argument forward. The most entertaining part of the argument is knowing what the matter is related to.

In an argument, we have four basic elements. They are claims, evidence, counterargument, and rebuttal. When claiming an argument, you are standing by what you say. It's almost demanding as a right to what the matter is. Evidence take place when you have an actually article (for example) that prove what you are stating is correct. Counterargument, can work either way. A person can take your side, or they can be on the opposing side of the argument. Perfect example. if there are four people. guarantee someone will be on the opposing end countering what you are stating with their facts/evidence. Debates are good. I think everyone love a good rebuttal. If you love to talk (like I do), the conversation can far, and I believe new sources and facts can come out of a rebuttal. A good argument, will make anyone do research.

I have experience many arguments in my day. This argument took place back in 2007, after my return from maternity leave with my first child, Josiah. Now everyone know how much I love working and for this particular company, I was with them for five years. My claims was the new Operations Manager at the time, didn't like doing her job, nor was she familiar with our location. She love to delegate her responsibilities on me, along with my daily work that I was responsible for. This went on for a good month until, I went to our manager and told her, along with providing evidence of the work that was being pushed on me. The counterargument was, I don't know the location, nor the clients like you do. The rebuttal at the end. If she keep on delegating her responsibilities to me, I should have her title and pay. After my manager carefully view both sides, she favored my side, because I had evidence, but more importantly I showed that I can do the work, without saying I can do the work. Meaning, I left the last word for my manager.

EXAMPLE OF A RESPONSE:

Hi BOB,

I think I had another class with you.

I also become irritated when a person do not see my point a view and if they don't agree I sometimes just shut down. I would never do well on debate teams.

I enjoyed reading your discussion and I support your opinion on removing God from all things, doing so will be is a very big mistake. this country was builded on Biblical principles and to survived it must be ruled by them. I can imagine this argument can become very emotional and difficult to remain open when a person knows God. I wish you much luck in this class and I look forward to reading more of you discussions.
