Atlanta Home Loan - control failure

Use the nine-step case analysis method, as instructed in the Required.

Required

You are a consultant who has been hired by Al Fiorini, the founder of Atlanta Home Loan, to assess the events that took place in the case. Consider that Al will be closing down the business; however, in the hope of starting a similar business, he wants to learn from this situation. Prepare a Memo to Al consisting of the following sections:

  1. Identify problems and issues, and analyze the data (steps 3 and 4 of the case method).
The following questions/requirements are provided to guide your analysis:
    1. List the controls that Al Fiorini used to control his business both before and after he went back to school. Classify each control as a results, action, or personnel/cultural control.
    2. Were the problems described in the case caused by failures in the company's strategy or control system, or both?
    3. What did Al do wrong? Include a discussion of the effectiveness of the controls that Al implemented.
  2. Generate alternatives and select decision criteria (steps 5 and 6 of the case method).
    1. Consider that Al wants to learn from this mistake, and remember the last statement in the case: What might he have done to prevent this disaster from happening?
Your answer should focus on the four types of controls.
    2. In preparing to make a recommendation, what is one decision criterion you will use to determine an appropriate set of controls to prevent a similar occurrence?
  3. Analyze and evaluate the alternatives (step 7 of the case method)
Evaluate the alternatives generated in part (b) based on the decision criterion you selected. Your discussion should lead to controls that are important to this situation and prepare the reader for your recommendation.
  4. Recommendation (step 8 of the case method)

Recommend three key controls that should be in place to reduce the probability of the case events reoccurring. Your response will be assessed on the basis of your ability to link your recommendation to your discussion of the problems and issues in part (a), your assessment of the alternatives based on the decision criterion in part (b), and your analysis in part (c).

Note: While a formal report is not required, your response must consist of parts (a) to (d) and should be in memo format. Submit your response in the same document as your answers to the previous questions in this assignment.

Basically there are five parts as shown below.

Identify issues and problems

Generate alternatives

Determine a criterion for evaluation

Evaluate all alternatives based on criterion

Make a recommendation

The best part is identifying issues and classifying them as proper categories. Some important parts are omitted. For example, there were no alternative generated before evaluation. Or some students make recommendation right after identifying issues.
