Assignment 1/Unit 1

The Discussion Board (DB) is part of the core of online learning. Classroom discussion in an online environment requires the active participation of students and the instructor to create robust interaction and dialogue. Every student is expected to create an original response to the open-ended DB question as well as engage in dialogue by responding to posts created by others throughout the week. At the end of each unit, DB participation will be assessed based on both level of engagement and the quality of the contribution to the discussion.

At a minimum, each student will be expected to post an original and thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to the weekly dialogue by responding to at least two other posts from students. The first contribution must be posted before midnight (Central Time) on Wednesday of each week. Two additional responses are required after Wednesday of each week. Students are highly encouraged to engage on the Discussion Board early and often, as that is the primary way the university tracks class attendance and participation.

The purpose of the Discussion Board is to allow students to learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content and the DB question. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB will be accepted after the end of each unit.

Review the Terminal Course Objectives, accessed by clicking on the "Course Information" tab at the top of your screen, scrolling down to the "Course Objectives" and then selecting View class objectives. How will accomplishing these objectives support your success in management? What risks or challenges might a manager encounter if they have not mastered these objectives? Explain.

Please submit your assignment.

Unit 1 Individual Project

For the Unit 1 assignments use the following scenario. Review the scenario first and then continue on with your assignment. Consider saving the PDF or printing it out for your reference.

You have been meeting with the CEO, the project sponsor, your manager, and the heads of all the other departments to discuss the project and their expectations. You are starting to be concerned about the level of risk of this project and whether or not the organization really understands it. As far as you can tell, the company has never done formal risk management, taking a more relaxed approach to risks. You are starting to develop your risk management plan; you will present it to your manager and the sponsor in two weeks along with some other project planning deliverables.

Assignment Guidelines:

•Create a project charter and identify the key constraints of the project (scope, budget, timeline, quality, people resources, etc.).

•Using the scenario from this unit, create a spreadsheet that lists all the project risks you see based on what you currently know about the project. List at least 15 risks. For each project risk, provide a: ?Detailed description

?Category (schedule, strategy, people, etc.)

Note: This list will be used in later activities throughout the course.

Your submitted assignment (140 points) must include the following:

•A 2-4 page typed document that includes: ?A project charter and identification of key constraints

?At least 15 risks listed in a spreadsheet with a detailed description and the category of each

Reflecting on the focus and content of this course, what is an important challenge facing management of organizations today, and how would you go about addressing it? Explain.

Unit 2 Individual Project

UYou met with your department manager, a few of the stakeholders, and the sponsor last week to review the list of possible risks. They accepted most of your risks and agreed that the next step was the assessment. There was some confusion, however, over how that step should be completed. Apparently, a prior project manager did a poor job with risk assessment and felt that it was an unnecessary activity. This resulted in the project encountering several risks and always being in fire-fighting mode. Several of the stakeholders (who were impacted most by this mode) want a much more formal approach taken to risk assessment (as does the CEO).

Assignment Guidelines:

You have scheduled a risk assessment meeting for later this week. Create a pre read document for the meeting participants that will walk them through how you will run the meeting and what they should prepare in advance. In your 3-4 page document, be sure to address the following:

•Who will you involve? (number of people, roles, and project responsibilities)

•How will you manage the group?

•What is your process for assessing the risks? What techniques will you use?

•Where will you start?

In preparation for the meeting and to help you focus on the upcoming task, review your list of risks. Practice the various techniques you will use by assessing at least 15 of your risks. Create a grid for this activity. Use a qualitative method to identify the high-priority and low-priority risks. Provide a rationale for your responses. Then, using a semi-quantitative method, create a risk score and probability/impact matrix for the remaining risks. The columns should be organized as follows:

•Risk event
•Probability
•Rationale for probability
•Impact
•Rationale for impact
•Next steps (describe what you need to do with this risk event next: nothing, further analysis, or determine actions)

Your submitted assignment (140 points) must include the following:

•A 3-4 page typed pre read document

•A grid assessing the risks you had outlined in Unit 1 formatted to the requirements listed above

Please submit your assignment.

Unit 3 Group Project

You are preparing the project risk-management plan for review with the sponsor and your manager. You have identified the risks, assessed the probabilities and impacts, and created your responses. You now need to present the comprehensive plan and gain the buy-in from the sponsor on the risk-management plan.

Individual Guidelines:

•Create risk responses (reduce probability, reduce impact, and respond) for each of the 15 risks you identified and assessed in the prior unit. ?Use either Word or Excel to record this information.

Please add your file.

Group Project Guidelines:

•Go to the Small Group Discussion Board and evaluate each other's responses and compile the results.

•Create a comprehensive risk-management plan. The risk-management plan should include: ?A description of the overall approach

?A risk matrix using a qualitative ranking approach
?Action plans for the high priority/high probability risks

•Be sure to address the following questions ?Are all possible risks identified?
?Are there redundant or overlapping risks?
?Is the level of detail consistent?
?Are the causes of the risks clearly defined?
?Are the assessments consistent? Is a clear ranking strategy used?
?Are the response strategies appropriate?
?Are secondary risks considered?

Your submitted Group Project (200 points) must include the following:

•A 1-3 page typed document per group member covering the aspects listed in the individual guidelines.

•A 3-6 page typed document covering the questions and aspects listed in the group project guidelines.

Please add your file.
