To be a smart dresser is to dress appropriately; to make a smart decision, you weigh all your options and pick the best one; to make a smart remark means you could be making a wisecrack at something; to be street smart means you can get around town and hold your own. In other words, to be smart could mean many things. There is always "book smart". That indicates that you do very well academically. Everyone is smart in different areas in their lives.

I believe it is the student’s own culture is where they feel the most confident. Their culture is where they were raised and what influences them in their day to day lives. When a student is confident in one area it will trickle over to other areas. Therefore, it is important, as a teacher, to recognize and respect the students’ culture to keep their confidence high. This will earn the student’s respect of the teacher and will want to perform at a greater level in the classroom.
