Activity 1: Case Study - Managing for improved performance
You have organised a Performance Review Interview/Performance Appraisal with a staff member - details as follows:
This Team member has a Senior Role in the organisation (Accounting and Financial services)
At their request the employee has been provided with significant project management training (qualification level) as part of their professional development following their last Performance Review.
The Department was very keen to adopt a project management framework to manage and assist the work of the department and the organisation. Since completing their qualification the employee had been identified as a person who could assist with the implementation of this new way of working.
Although the employee has been very enthusiastic about each project and keen to utilize their new skills and knowledge it has been apparent on each project that the employee displayed the following behaviours occurred:
- Poor teamwork
- Difficulties with completing tasks in a timely manner
- Lack of effective report writing skills
- Not able or willing to assist / instruct other less experienced /knowledgeable team members on project management systems
- Lack of understanding of the role and the links to the strategic direction of the organisation
Part A - This activity requires you to describe how you would manage the performance of this team member with a performance problem.
1. Analyse the possible causes of the performance problem.
2. Develop and explain supportive strategies for resolving the performance problem, utilising a managing for improved performance approach.
3. Where would you gain support or assistance to assist you through this process?
4. Describe and justify the leadership style and communication skills you would use.
5. Document this process using your organisations performance management tools (performance plan, learning and development plan).
Part B - If this team member does not improve their performance and continues to perform below expectations, what are the next steps in the process - provide a flow chart of the next steps in the process - leading to termination of the staff member if poor-performance continues.
