Lisa Yang and Megan Quick graduated from college together and accepted job offers in the same company. Lisa took a position in Seattle and Megan went to work in the firm's Chicago office. They had the opportunity to renew their friendship at the company's training program at the end of their first year. During their time together, they shared stories about successes and failures and compared notes on a variety of things, inclusing their managers' leadership approaches. Lisa enjoyed her morning meetings with her manager, which were often held at a coffe shop near her office. Lisa loved a great cup of coffee to get her day off to a good start.Megan, on the other hand, enjoyed a morning workout before she made it to her office. Her manager was a veteran whose fondness for fitness carried overinto her civilian life. Lisa listened to Megan singthe praises of her sales manager, Emily Littlejohn. Megan commented that Emily's employees affectionately called her, "Lieutenant". We come in and Lieutenant tells us what to do," Megan said. I never have to wonder what's upor how to deal with a problem. She tells me what to do. She is super results oriented. You always get pats on the back, and she has a whiteboard in the office that lists the progress that the sales team has made. Lisa wondered about a manger who told you what to do so much. "Wow, Megan, your manager sounds like she is still back in the service with her troops -not like the leader of your sales team. I think she'd drive me nuts!". "What do you mean?" Megan questioned. "She seems like the perfect leader. What else should she be doing?" Put yourself in Lisa's shoes. what should she tell Megan about what alternative leadership behaviors "Lieutenant practiced outside her office?
