Digital data to analog signals
A modem (modulator-demodulator) converts digital data to analog signal. There are three ways to modulate a digital signal upon a analog carrier signal.
1. Amplitude shift keying (ASK): is a form of modulation which represents digital data as variations in the amplitude of a carrier wave.There are Two different amplitudes of carrier frequency represent '0' and '1'.
2. Frequency shift keying (FSK): In Frequency Shift Keying, a change in frequency define different digits. Two totally different frequencies near carrier frequency represent '0' ,''1'.
3. Phase shift keying (PSK): The phase of the carrier is discretely varied in relation either to a reference phase or to the phase of the immediately preceding signal element, in accordance with data that is being transmitted. Here phase of carrier signal is shifted to represent '0' and '1'.

A digital signal is strictly sequence of discrete , discontinuous voltage pulses. Each and every pulses a signal element. Here encoding scheme is an important factor in how successfully the receiver interprets the incoming signal.
