The Competing Values Framework

The Competing Values Framework of Rohrbaugh and Robert Quinn is a theory that was originated initially from research acted on the major indicators of efficient organizations. Based on statistical studies of a complete list of effectualness indicators, Rohrbaugh and Quinn (1983) came upon two major dimensions inherent conceptions of effectualness.

Competing Values in Organizational Effectiveness

  •   The first dimension is referred to organizational concentrate from an internal stress on the development and well-being of people in the organization for an external centralize on the development and well-being of the organization itself.
  •   The another dimension distinguishes the organizational preference towards structure and presents the contrast between flexibility and stability and change and control. Unitedly the two dimensions form four quadrants.

The Competing Values Framework acquired its name since the criteria in the four models at first appear to contain contravening messages. Organization must be flexible and adaptable, but we need them at the same time to be controlled and stable.

Each quadrant of the framework constitutes one of four main models of management and organization theory :

  •   Human Relations Model. Points a lot of focus on internal concentration and flexibility. It stresses morale, cohesion and human resources development as standards for effectualness.
  •   Open Systems Model. Underlines external concentration and flexibility and stresses readiness, resource acquisition, external support and growth.
  •   Rational Goal Model. Underlines control and an external immersion. It involves goal setting, efficiency, planning and productivity as being effective.
  •   Internal Process Model. Underlines control and an internal concentration and stresses the role of information management, control, communication and stability.

The leading model of leadership was gained theoretically and constitutes "a suppositional rather than an experimental statement regarding the perceptual understructure of leadership".
