The University of Western Sydney (UWS) is a large research-led metropolitan university with campuses throughout Greater Western Sydney, which is one of the fastest growing and most dynamic areas in Australia. It is home of over 1.8 million people, Greater Western Sydney is one of country’s most significant economic powerhouses, with the $80 billion economy which is the third largest in Australia.
Like the region, UWS is enterprising and forward-looking. It embraces the diversity and is committed to access, excellence and opportunity. The University brings knowledge to life in the education of students for the employment, the application of research to the contemporary problems, and commonly enriching partnerships with organizations, local schools, businesses and community groups.
Established in the year 1989, UWS can trace its history back to 1891 when it was the oldest predecessor, the Hawkesbury Agricultural College, which enrolled the students in the beginning. Today the university has more than 40,000 students and 2,500 staff. Its diverse local and international population creates vibrant intellectual environments and enriches the student experience.
Each campus – Bankstown, Hawkesbury, Nirimba (Blacktown), Campbelltown, and Westmead Precinct, UWSCollege, Parramatta and Penrith – has its own character, so although it is one of Australia’s largest universities, UWS is known as a friendly and welcoming place.
UWS has professionally relevant degrees which develop students’ critical thinking and academic skills. Several courses are developed with industry input, and are taught by the people who are leaders in their fields, having students in touch with the real-world requirements and best practice.
UWS graduates are creating an impact through their professional endeavors and helping to make a difference in their communities. They are generally known by employers for being able to hit the ground running and are achieving career successes in government and the legal community, in health profession, in scientific and research fields, in business world, and through arts, creative disciplines and humanities.
The new School of Medicine of the University is also helping solve medical workforce shortages by training the extra doctors to work across the Greater Western Sydney’s health services, hospitals, and general practices.
The UWS research program ranks among the nations best – a major driver of new knowledge and innovation that is relevant to the lives of all Australians. One of its basic strengths is its collaboration with government, industry, and the community sectors.
The University’s internationally-recognized research centers are tackling issues such as applied science and technology, social sciences, health, cultural research, business and innovation studies, psychology, education, and urban research. UWS is home of the $40 million Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment research facility - one of the most comprehensive centers of its kind in the world working on sustainable solutions for the future.
