The University of Tasmania (UTAS) is the State’s only university as well as an Australian institution of international standing. By its campuses in the Cradle Coast, and Hobart, Launceston UTAS involved with the Tasmanian community and utilizes the very best of its unique environment and the island’s natural and built resources to deliver quality higher education and research.
From the time it was founded in the year 1890, UTAS has been pivotal to the development of Tasmania and Tasmanians and now its reach and impact extends across Australia and around the world.
It has a growing student population of 27,000 with above 6,000 international students drawn from over 80 countries. UTAS comprises transnational education programs in China, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. UTAS also works with the institutions around world which offer students an international experience, having 70 exchange arrangements in place with 30 countries.
UTAS graduates are eagerly sought: a degree from UTAS is an internationally respected qualification and one that opens doors to a myriad of opportunities.
UTAS provides a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs and while its teaching, learning and research is global in scope, it also takes direction from Tasmania’s distinctiveness.
Its location ensures a close affiliation with Antarctic and Southern Ocean science, having a strong focus on climate change. The Institute for the Marine and Antarctic Studies was established in the year 2010 to expand research strengths and explore new opportunities.
UTAS has excellence in the population and health research, through the Menzies Research Institute Tasmania, and is the basic provider of maritime research and teaching through the Australian Maritime College.
UTAS also includes the Centre of Excellence in the Ore Deposits, collaboration among the Australian Government, the minerals industry, university partners, and the Australian Centre for the Research on Separation Science. The Antarctic Climate and the Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre and CRC for Forestry are housed at the UTAS and it is a member of the Aquafin, Bushfire, Sustainable Tourism and Smart Internet Technology CRCs.
UTAS has a unique and comprehensive partnership agreement with the Tasmanian Government – a long-term collaboration for the benefit of Tasmania’s economic, cultural and social growth. It also has established partnerships with federal, state, and local governments and along with business and industry through the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture; the Tasmanian Electronic Commerce Centre; the Tasmanian Institute for the Law Enforcement Studies; the Law Reform Institute; and the Australian Innovation Research Centre.
