The University of Queensland (UQ) is in the top one per cent of all universities worldwide as measured through a combination of three key global rankings – the Shanghai Jiao Tong, Times Higher, and QS World University. UQ has won much more Australian Teaching and Learning Council Awards for the Teaching Excellence than any other university in country and attracts the majority of Queensland’s highest academic achievers, as well as the top interstate and overseas students.
UQ’s almost 200,000 graduates include an Academy Award winner, a Nobel laureate, and leaders in government, science, law, public service and the arts. It comprises of six faculties and 45,455 students consisting one of Australia’s largest PhD enrolments and more than 11,000 international students from the 134 nations.
In the year2011, 4574 research higher degree students were enrolled at UQ (4006 PhD and 568 MPhils). University recently celebrated its 9000th PhD graduation.
With $29.79 million for almost 100 projects, UQ has topped the nation in several grants awarded and was second in dollar value for the 2012 round one funding of the Australian Research Council Discovery Projects scheme. In the recent years, UQ has developed eight world-class research institutes – the Institute for Molecular Bioscience; the Queensland Brain Institute; the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology; the Sustainable Minerals Institute; the UQ Diamantina Institute; the Institute for Social Science Research; the Global Change Institute; and the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation – which has led to innovative discoveries such as the development of the world’s first cervical cancer vaccine.
UQ ranks first out of the Australian universities for license income, value of equity holdings and invention disclosures, new Australian patents and active start-up companies.
Established by UQ in 1984, UQ’s UniQuest is widely recognized as one of Australia’s largest and most successful university commercialization groups. Working with agencies such as AusAID, NZAID, the Development Bank Asia and the World Bank, UniQuest has implemented and developed more than 400 projects in 46 countries all through the Pacific, South-East Asia, the Indian sub-continent and Africa.
UQ is committed to developing state-of-the-ar t learning spaces that are in step with industry demands and expectations. Facilities, like the $96 million Pharmacy Australia Centre of Excellence (PACE) precinct which adjoins the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, the recent $100 million School of Veterinary Science at the Gatton campus, and the soon to be completed $133 million Advanced Engineering Building at St Lucia and $120 million Oral Health facility at the Herston, grant students approach to world- class researchers and industry professionals.
The UQ Graduate School aims to increase the number of students enrolled in research higher degrees at UQ through the UQ Career Advantage PhD Program. It was designed to accelerate career development and enhance employability, it provides three packages: Translation and Commercialisation; Higher Education Practice and Leadership; Research Innovation, and Global Collaborations.
