University of Melbourne is one of the leading centres of higher education and research in Australia, located in Parkville on the fringe of Melbourne’s central business district.
The University’s high rankings in independent international surveys reflect its excellence in learning, strong research performance, and teaching and the intellectual and social capital accumulated over the past 158 years. In prestigious in the year 2011 Times Higher Education rankings of the world’s top 200 universities, Melbourne ranked first in Australia and 37th in the world. Having this result, Melbourne is the highest placed Australian university in three of the four major world rankings, the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan rankings nationally, topping the Shanghai Jiao Tong and placing second in the QS table.
The University has about 49,000 students, having 11,800 international students, and around 7,000 staff. It offers degrees in science, humanities, the creative and social science, performing arts, and the professions. In the year 2007, the University launched a groundbreaking new curriculum to better equip its graduates with the breadth and depth of education they will need in their future careers.
In the year 2010, the first students enrolled in new undergraduate courses in biomedicine, commerce, environments, music, arts, and science graduated from the University. The University offers one of Australia’s well known comprehensive scholarship programs, merit and equity based. The Access to the Melbourne program is now extended to professional graduate courses, assists over 1,000 students each year who have experienced financial, educational or social disadvantage.
Melbourne also leads in strategically important research, which can be seen in more than 90 research centers. In the year 2011, it was awarded one National Health and Medical Research Council Australia Fellowship and three Australian Laureate Fellowships. The University consists of one of the largest cohorts of graduate researchers in Australia with over 4800 PhD, research doctorate and masters by research candidates. In addition, in 2010 The University of Melbourne awarded around 10 per cent of all PhD degrees in Australia.
Last year, Melbourne’s researchers also secured the largest total amount of research income as well as the most Australian Competitive Grant funding. They produced the good publications, the research degree completions, and were the winner of the most Australian Postgraduate Awards and International Postgraduate Research Scholarships. The Melbourne’s research performance has also contributed to it being the home of an IBM Research and Development Centre and Stem Cells Australia (SCA).
The University of Melbourne also contributes to Australia’s cultural dynamism through programs such as the Melbourne University Publishing, the Ian Potter Museum of Art, Melbourne Theatre Company, and Asialink.
