Macquarie University enrols 37,000 students annually across four faculties – Business and Arts, Science, Economics, and Human Sciences – and employs over 2,000 staff. There is an additional smaller campus in the Sydney CBD, and courses are offered in Singapore, Melbourne, Hong Kong and Beijing also. These courses, Macquarie’s Masters of the Applied Finance, are the largest program of its type in the world. Affiliated with the University do several research centers, schools and institutes comprise the highly regarded Macquarie Graduate School of Management.
Each year thousands of international students travel from around the world to study at Macquarie, along with its business and accounting courses particularly attractive to the foreign students. The UK Times Higher Education ranked Macquarie as the top university in Australia for research citations in environmental science and ecology. Macquarie has moved up the Academic Rankings of World Universities, improving its position every year from the year 2006 to 2011. This University is led by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Steven Schwartz, who has before served as Vice-Chancellor of Brunel University in London and of Murdoch University in Western Australia.
Macquarie is the modern university with various new facilities resulting from a $1 billion infrastructure and capital works program together with Government and private investment from the likes of Cochlear Limited, which recently relocated its global headquarters to the campus.
Other new buildings and projects include a train station and sport and aquatic centre, The Australia’s first post-fellowship, sub department medical school and the Macquarie University Hospital. A 97 million dollar University Library opened in the year 2011, the most advanced academic library in the country, while the 140 million dollar Australian Hearing Hub will open in the year 2012. This unique world-class facility is designed to facilitate collaborative research into hearing and related speech and language disorders.
